Japan, twice host of the winter Olympics, has a range of winter sports on offer. Downhill, Nordic, Night and Off-piste skiing are available, with short and long runs. Difficulty is often over-estimated. Snowboarding can be enjoyed at most resorts, and is especially good at Gala Yuzawa Resort. The Iwappara resort is home to the countries longest sled run. Minakami Kogen and Yuzawa Nakazato are snowmobile playgrounds. Snowshoe trekking and Ice drift walks are other winter sports activities which can also be experienced and enjoyed. There are over 500 winter sports resorts, from northern Hokkaido to southern Kyushu. Some parts receiving 18 metres of snow annually. The season generally runs from December to March. However, the Gassan ski resort, runs from April to July, due to its altitude and heavy snow fall. The ski resorts range from modern well-equipped resorts, to small family destinations with a single lift. The bigger resorts like Niseko and Shiga Kogen, are equipped with gondolas, high-speed quad-lifts and ropeways. Accommodation is provided in modern lodges, with Japanese and Western cuisine. Because of Japan’s high-speed rail network, travelling to most of the countries ski resorts is simple. There are several resorts within 90 minutes of Tokyo.
