Located in The Alps, Austria is a great winter sports destination for locals and international visitors. Regular snow falls, and mountainous places, provide plenty of locations for numerous resorts to experience and enjoy downhill and cross-country skiing. There are also some snow parks for snowboarders. In Austria, skiing is available in quaint mountain villages, where the food and hospitality of the locals can provide a counter-point to the sports on offer. The regions of Innsbruck, Arlberg, and Saalbach/Hinterglemm provide plenty of variety for skiing and board riding, with hundreds of kilometres of well groomed trails, and well-maintained lifts, and gondalas. It is often possible to start at one resort and finish the day at another. Resorts in these locations, have excellent après-ski and nightlife facilities. For non-skiers, ice-skating, sledding and sleigh rides can provide lots of fun and entertainment. Cuisine on the mountain tops, in the villages, and at the resorts, is of a first-class international standard. Vienna, the capital, has winter sports facilities on its outskirts, and is a short ride from the city centre. Austria has hosted the Winter Olympics twice, and the Kitzbühel region is a favourite with the rich and famous, and with European royalty.
